Alcohol Awareness Month
Together, We Can Stop Underage Drinking

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is “Together, We Can Stop Underage Drinking”. Sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD), Alcohol Awareness Month started in 1987 as a national public awareness campaign to encourage communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues, especially on the effects of underage drinking.
NCADD is extending an open invitation to everyone to participate in three alcohol-free days during Alcohol-Free Weekend from Friday, April 1st to Sunday, April 3, 2005 in hopes of raising awareness about alcohol use and its effects on people’s lives.
Also in April is the National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD), this year held on Thursday, April 7th. NASD is designed to raise awareness on the consequences of at-risk drinking and health issues pertaining to alcohol consumption. The program includes a written screening questionnaire with the opportunity for participants to meet with health professionals. Find Alcohol Screening Day sites in your area.
NCADD was founded in 1944 to fight the stigma and disease of alcoholism and other drug addictions. NASD is a program of Screening for Mental Health (SMH) in association with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
