Position Description:
The Marin Institute – the nation’s leading alcohol industry watchdog – is looking for a dynamic print and digital content writer and editor to join our action-oriented group of dedicated public health, public policy, and advocacy team. We are seeking an experienced journalist or communications expert to research and monitor print and online media and other reports on the alcohol industry, collect and summarize information, write articles, letters to the editor, blog entries, and action alerts. The Writer / Editor will play an integral role focused on counter-industry research and advocacy. This person will also be a valued contributor in developing organizing strategies, research projects, and policy advocacy and gain significant experience in high impact campaigns that change minds and public policy.
If you want to help expose the alcohol industry’s dirty tricks in promoting harmful products, engaging in deceptive marketing (particularly marketing that targets youth and minority groups), and undermining public policy, and have performed a similar function in another industry watchdog or public health-oriented advocacy group, this job is for you. Working under the supervision of the Research and Policy Director, and in concert with advocacy staff, your responsibilities will include:
- Research, write, and edit content for Marin Institute websites and other publications, including oversight of the Marin Institute blog to maintain a dynamic and up-to-date online presence
- Manage editorial production and dissemination of electronic and print publications
- Read and monitor national news feeds on alcohol industry practices and reform policies
- Develop and maintain list of target publications for research and advocacy articles
- Ensure that systems related to internal editorial process, as well as external written communications with media, allies, and constituents are working efficiently and effectively
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ability to write and edit concise journalistic and website content for a lay audience
- Education and/or work experience in public health, public policy, research or communications
- Ability to work quickly under deadline, independently and in a team environment
- Ability to translate complex research information into lay language
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills
- Strong administrative and project-coordination skills
- Desire to use research and advocacy to advance social change/progressive public health policy
Desired Qualifications:
- Masters in public health, communications, journalism, or other relevant field
- At least three years experience in a fast-paced journalism or advocacy environment
- Experience with internet advocacy, especially Convio and Joomla! software
- Experience with Dreamweaver or other WYSIWYG helpful
- Experience with and understanding of HTML and Flash
- Copy-editing and proofreading experience
